Every now and then, you may see Liora or Qubine mention something called "the Passage." So what exactly is the Passage?

The Passage is a journey that the Kalma Clan dragons take to learn how to fight. Some call it a training program, while others call it a ritual.

Dragons are arranged in teams of three and enter the appropriate venue for their strength and skill level, and engage in battle with the beasts that reside there. With these battles, they learn how to work together while maintaining a sense of independence. Each dragon learns unique ways to utilize their inherited elemental abilities, and develop their own unique strategies to deal with any situation that comes their way. The obvious downside, of course, is the high probability of death. The Passage teams are usually initially assigned by Qubine, and the records are maintained by Amadeus. The teams who have successfully completed the Passage are as follows, listed by Name | Dragon Breed | Element…

Qubine | Mirror | Ice
Grim | Fae | Nature
Usha | Mirror |Nature

Coco | Mirror | Nature
Sabori | Guardian | Shadow
Kincaid | Fae | Nature

Azalea | Fae | Fire
Malus | Guardian | Water
Amadeus | Tundra | Light

Lazarus | Mirror | Ice
Handel | Fae | Nature
Aether | Mirror | Nature

Teams should consist of at least one fighter and one caster. Two fighters/one caster is best, but one fighter/two casters will suffice as well. Dragons are encouraged to use their better judgment during the Passage battles, and to focus on building strength or magic power, along with speed and endurance. They may carry potions for healing and curing ailments, and they are encouraged to retreat from a battle if they feel they are overwhelmed (it's all part of learning to use their better judgment). They may proceed with the Passage at their own pace, but may not quit once they have begun. Dragons are also encouraged to bring back any loot they may find, from food, to materials or trinkets. No matter how "useless" the item may seem, it may make a useful ingredient in Orphne's medicines, or Percival and Brahm's alchemy cauldron.

If dragons are struggling with their Passage, they may seek guidance and advice from Qubine or any other dragons who have completed it (or even those who are just farther ahead). If they have trouble with a particular venue, they may train in the previous venue until their strength and skills improve enough to press forward.

If a dragon dies during the Passage, it is recommended for their surviving partners to wait for a replacement. Under special circimstances, Qubine will personally train a new dragon to the level that matches the team he or she will be joining. The loss of a comrade also teaches the clan to mourn and respect the fallen, and teaches them to move forward after facing tragedy. If the survivors are able, they will bring the fallen dragon back to the lair for burial. If the survivors are unable to carry the fallen dragon, they report to Qubine and Amadeus, who will then send larger, stronger dragons back to the venue to bring the fallen home. It is possible to continue as a pair, but it will be extremely difficult. Handel and Aether were able to finish the Bamboo Falls after losing their second mutual partner, Merrick. After Tyra's death, Lazarus and Beryl attempted to finish the Bamboo Falls as a pair, which only resulted in Beryl's death. Afterwards, Qubine helped to train Lazarus to reach Handel and Aether's level so he could join their team.

The dragons who have fallen in the Passage are as follows, again, listed by Name | Dragon Breed | Element | Venue of their death…

Meanwhile, the teams who are still undergoing the Passage are as follows...

Renelle | Nocturne | Fire
Lexine | Nocturne | Lightning

Decilla | Guardian | Plague
Rafadel | Fae | Plague

While there are no special prizes for completing the Passage, survivors are imbued with confidence in the skills, strategies, and abilities they've learned to pull them through whatever comes their way.

Surviving the Passage is only the beginning.

[...What do these beasts want if they're not going to kill him?]

I am Qubine, leader of the Kalma Clan in Sornieth.

Qubine is a Lvl 25 Mirror dragon, who was part of Usha and Grim's Filia clan. He is the mate of Shayla, and father of Gaheris and Krashos. When the plague hit the lair, Qubine was the only dragon who was unaffected. Thus he built an entirely new clan, later christened the Kalma Clan.

Qubine's color/gene combo is Shadow Clown, Royal Basic, and Fire Basic. He wears a Red Warrior Face Mask, a Nomad's Sandwaste Vest, and Gold Filigree Gauntlets and Boots. The steel armband on his upper right arm is a symbol of his clan leadership.

As an Ice dragon, he comes off as cold and emotionless. It's not that he doesn't care about anyone. After the plague started, Qubine was well aware that any of his dragons could die on any given day. Thus he refused to allow himself to become attached to very many dragons. Upon hearing of a clan mate's death, he simply shakes his head and walks away. He's disappointed, yes, but he continues to put up his façade to keep the clan moving forward.

Qubine prefers a "no-nonsense" approach to a problem, even ones caused by his own dragons. Although the amount of ongoing nonsense had increased as the clan increased in size. He prefers to solve a problem as quickly as possible, and for troublesome dragons or Beastclans, that meant beating them to a pulp as quickly as possible. As the clan's strongest warrior, he can do just that. He's also developed a tactical mind, which allows him to lead his clan into battle with other clans.
